Independence Day 2008

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."



Die älteste Demokratie der Welt feiert heute Geburtstag und ist mit ihrer Unabhängigkeitserklärung und der späteren Verfassung das leuchtende Vorbild für jeden späteren demokratischen Staat gewesen. Auch wenn es Demokratie in den USA zeitweise nur mit Abstrichen gegeben hat und das Land den oben genannten Idealen nicht immer gerecht wurde - die Ideen, die hier formuliert wurden, dass alle Menschen gleich erschaffen wurden, dass sie unveräußerliche Grundrechte haben und von Regierungen regiert werden sollen, die ihre Macht vom Volke beziehen, waren seit jeher ein Leuchtfeuer der Hoffnung für alle Menschen auf der Welt; vor allem für jene, für die diese Ideen nicht zum Lebensalltag gehörten und immer noch nicht gehören.

Und so ist es nur angemessen, dass der Independence Day kein Feiertag ist, der nur auf amerikanischem Boden Bedeutung hat. Es sollte ein Feiertag sein, der von der ganzen Welt begangen wird - von jenen, die in Freiheit und Demokratie leben und jenen, die dieses Privileg noch nicht genießen. Denn die Founding Fathers sahen "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" nicht als amerikanische Rechte, sondern als universelle Rechte an. Und so schrieb Thomas Jefferson kurz vor seinem Tode: "May it be to the world, what I believe it will be -- to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all -- the Signal of arousing men to burst the chains, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government." Und bei aller Realpolitik sollte man sich nicht darin täuschen, dass es auch immer dieses von Jefferson formulierte Bewusstsein ist, dass z.B. einen Irakkrieg mit begründet.

In seiner Rede zum vierten July sagte George W. Bush heute: "Looking back 232 years later, it's easy to forget how revolutionary Jefferson's draft was. At the time, some dismissed it as empty rhetoric. They believed the British Empire would crush the 13 colonies in the field of battle. And they believed a nation dedicated to liberty could never survive the world ruled by kings.
Today we know history had other plans. After many years of war, the United States won its independence. The principles that Thomas Jefferson enshrined in the Declaration became the guiding principles of the new nation. And at every generation, Americans have rededicated themselves to the belief that all men are created equal, with the God-given right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
