Es ist der letzte 9/11-Jahrestag an dem der amtierende US-Präsident der gleiche ist wie der, der am 11. September 2001 selbst und in den schwierigen Wochen und Monaten danach die Verantwortung und Pflichten des Präsidentenamtes inne hatte. In einem Jahr wird zum ersten Mal jemand anderes als George W. Bush die Trauerfeierlichkeiten in den USA anführen. Es wird noch viele US-Präsidenten geben, aber nur einer wird wissen, was es bedeutete, am 11. September 2001 und in der Zeit danach, Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten gewesen zu sein; nur der Name von einem ist mit diesem Tag für immer verbunden: George W. Bush. Genau wie ein Rudy Giuliani oder ein Donald Rumsfeld, die beide schon aus ihren am 11. September inne gehabten Ämtern ausgeschieden sind, wird auch George Bush in den kommenden Jahren zum Kreis der automatisch Eingeladenen gehören, wenn irgendwo den Toten des 11. Septembers gedacht oder ein Denkmal zu ihren Ehren eingeweiht wird. Und heute, bei der Einweihung des Pentagon Memorials, sah man auch, dass die Hinterbliebenen der Opfer eine besondere Verbindung zu den damaligen Entscheidungsträgern fühlen, da es zwei der offiziellen Redner waren, die bei der Einweihungszeremonie Standing Ovations bekamen: Donald Rumsfeld und George W. Bush.
Das Pentagon Memorial ist das erste nationale Denkmal zu Ehren der am 11. September Getöteten, das bereits fertig gestellt werden konnte - ein Umstand, auf den das US-Verteidigungsministerium stolz ist. Obwohl schwer getroffen, wurde das Pentagon vor sieben Jahren nie evakuiert, die wichtigsten Arbeitsprozesse liefen weiter und noch am selben Abend wurde bekannt gegeben, dass das Pentagon auch am nächsten Tag "in business" sein werde. All dies wurde vor allem vom damaligen Verteidigungsminister Rumsfeld angestoßen, der das Pentagon am 11. September nie verließ und direkt nach dem Terroranschlag half, Verletzte zu bergen. Die damals getöteten Soldaten gelten als "gefallen" und die verletzten als "im Kampf verwundet" - das Pentagon als eines der ersten Schlachtfelder im Kampf gegen den Terror. Heute nun kam Rumsfeld zum ersten Mal nach seinem Rücktritt vor fast zwei Jahren ans Pentagon zurück, um eine Rede zu halten. Das Pentagon Memorial war ihm ein persönliches Anliegen und so spendeten er und seine Frau 250 000 Dollar aus eigener Tasche, um bei der Finanzierung des Denkmals zu helfen. Seine Rede bei der Einweihungszeremonie spiegelte seine Verbundenheit mit den damaligen Pentagon-Mitarbeitern, den Opfern des Anschlags und den Hinterbliebenen wider: "Men and women of the Pentagon -- military and civilian -- what a high honor it is to be with you again. We went through a great deal since September 11th, and I will always treasure our time together. [...] Those of us who were in the Pentagon on September 11th share -- and we will always share -- a very special bond with each member of the [victims'] families and with each other. We will not forget the way this huge building shook. We will not forget our colleagues and friends who were taken from us and from their families. And we will not forget what that deadly attack has meant for our country."
Ein bewegter Donald Rumsfeld sagte über das Pentagon Memorial: " This memorial tells the story of [the victims'] last, terrible moments on this Earth -- moments when families were destroyed, when a symbol of America’s strength was scarred, and when our country became, in the words of an American poet, “acquainted with the night". [...] Here, beneath the sloping fields of Arlington National Cemetery -- fields that hold our nation’s fallen -- this building stands as a silent monument to the resolve of a free people. And so too this memorial in its shadow will stand not only as a symbol of a nation’s grief, but as an eternal reminder of men and women of valor who saw flame and smoke and stepped forward to save and protect the lives of their fellow Americans on September 11th. Let it also remind us of each of those who have volunteered to serve in our nation’s armed forces, before and every day since. Our nation’s military has stood guard in this new age of peril, determined that what happened here, seven years ago, must not happen again. We have been “acquainted with the night.” We have taken its measure. In the darkest of times, we have stood together. In defiance, our nation has pressed on toward morning. With resolve renewed, and with the certain strength of the American people, our nation will force the dawn. My constant prayer is that God will bless the families of those we remember this day. And that the good Lord will bless all of those who have lost loved ones in the long struggle that has followed. We are deeply in their debt. And each of us will remain so for the rest of our lives."
Kurz vor der eigentlichen Einweihung des Denkmals sprach George W. Bush. Verteidigungsminister Gates kündigte ihn mit den Worten an: "The man I’m about to introduce once said that 'Our nation is strong of heart, firm of purpose.' Those words also describe him. For the last seven years, George W. Bush has steadfastly led the defense of our country and faithfully supported the men and women of the U.S. military."
In seiner Rede erinnerte George Bush zunächst an den Tag, dessen heute zum siebten Mal gedacht wird: "Seven years ago at this hour, a doomed airliner plunged from the sky, split the rock and steel of this building, and changed our world forever. The years that followed have seen justice delivered to evil men and battles fought in distant lands. But each year on this day, our thoughts return to this place. Here, we remember those who died. And here, on this solemn anniversary, we dedicate a memorial that will enshrine their memory for all time. [...] Seven years ago this morning, police officer Cecil Richardson was on duty here at the Pentagon. He saw the terror that day with his own eyes. He says on some nights he can still smell the burning metal and smoke. Not long ago, he wrote me saying, 'I remember the reasons we fight. I remember the losses we felt. And I remember the peace we will have.'"
Bush erinnerte an die unzähligen Heldentaten, die es am 11. September im World Trade Center, am Pentagon und an Bord von Flug 93 gegeben hat. Aufgrund dieser Heldentaten sei einer der schlimmsten Tage in der US-Geschichte zu einem der heldenreichsten geworden: "On a day when buildings fell, heroes rose."
Das Pentagon Memorial besteht aus 184 Bänken - eine für jedes Opfer. Sie stehen in Richtung des Flugpfades von American Airlines Flug 77, der im Pentagon endete, nur wenige Kilometer von dort entfernt, wo er begann. Auf jeder Bank ist der Name eines der Opfer eingraviert. Um den Namen eines Opfers lesen zu können, das im Pentagon starb, muss man sich zum Pentagon drehen. Wenn man den Namen eines Opfers lesen will, das an Bord von Flug 77 starb, muss man sich dem Himmel zuwenden.
George Bush drückte aus, was dieses Denkmal für die Hinterbliebenen bedeutet: "For the families and friends of the fallen, this memorial will be a place of remembrance. Parents will come here to remember children who boarded Flight 77 for a field trip and never emerged from the wreckage. Husbands and wives will come here to remember spouses who left for work one morning and never returned home. People from across our nation will come here to remember friends and loved ones who never had the chance to say goodbye. A memorial can never replace what those of you mourning a loved one have lost. We pray that you will find some comfort amid the peace of these grounds. We pray that you will find strength in knowing that our nation will always grieve with you."
