Goodbye (Teil 11)

Heute: George Bushs legendärer Auftritt auf Ground Zero, drei Tage nach dem 11. September.

George W. Bush besuchte New York erst drei Tage nach den Anschlägen, um vorher die Bergungsarbeiten der Rettungskräfte nicht zu stören. Auf Ground Zero angekommen, ließ er sich zunächst von Experten die Lage erklären und ging dann herum, um den Rettungskräften zu danken, die in den Tagen zuvor zu Helden geworden waren.

In seiner Wahlkampfrede 2004 erinnerte sich George Bush an diesen Tag: "On September the 14th, 2001, I stood in the ruins of the Twin Towers. I'll never forget the day. I'll never forget the sights and sounds of standing in that rubble. I remember workers in hard hats yelling at me: Whatever it takes. I remember doing my best to console those who had come out of the rubble, and a guy looked me right in the eye, and he said: Don't let me down. I've waken up every morning since that day thinking about how best to protect America. I will never relent in defending the security of this country, whatever it takes."

In seinem Arm hielt Bush FDNY-Feuerwehrmann Bob Beckwith, der eigentlich schon im Ruhestand war, jedoch zu Ground Zero kam, um nach dem Anschlag bei den Bergungsarbeiten mitzuhelfen. Eigentlich war es nicht geplant gewesen, dass George Bush bei seinem Besuch am Ground Zero eine Rede halten würde. Spontan wurde entschieden, dass die Rettungskräfte doch ein paar Worte von ihrem Präsidenten hören sollten und so wurde spontan eine kleine Anhöhe gesucht, auf die sich Bush stellen konnte und es wurde auf die Schnelle ein Megaphon aufgetrieben.

Die Reichweite des Megaphons war jedoch alles andere als weit, weshalb einige der Rettungskräfte riefen: "We can't hear you". So entstand erst die berühmte Situation, in der Bush rief: "I can hear you...".
Der Nachrichtensprecher vom oben verlinkten Video hatte die Bedeutung der Bilder sofort erkannt, als er sagte: "An amazing historic moment. One of the many images that will stand out as we look back at the attack on America: President George W. Bush standing on the rubble of the World Trade Center waving the American flag, a bullhorn in hand."


Dieser 14. September 2001 war von George Bush zu einem nationalen Gedenktag ausgerufen worden und so gab es am Morgen einen zentralen Gedenkgottesdienst in der National Cathedral in Washington. In diesem Gottesdienst hielt George W. Bush eine großartige Rede.

Ein Auszug:

"Now come the names, the list of casualties we are only beginning to read. They are the names of men and women who began their day at a desk or in an airport, busy with life. They are the names of people who faced death, and in their last moments called home to say, be brave, and I love you. They are the names of passengers who defied their murderers, and prevented the murder of others on the ground. They are the names of men and women who wore the uniform of the United States, and died at their posts. They are the names of rescuers, the ones whom death found running up the stairs and into the fires to help others. We will read all these names. We will linger over them, and learn their stories, and many Americans will weep. To the children and parents and spouses and families and friends of the lost, we offer the deepest sympathy of the nation. And I assure you, you are not alone."
